Site Automation Engineer | Technology Enthusiast Co-Founder | Researcher | PhD student

I am Akua Kodie Dickson, a self-driven, driven and focused Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and currently a Site Automation Engineer with Automation Group Ghana. I entered university at the age of 16 with the aim of acquiring the knowledge and skills to become the great engineer that I want to be. In a Ghanaian society where engineering has been branded as a male-dominated field of study, the journey has come with challenges. I believe that with every new chapter in life comes fear and doubt, but the fact is that fear and doubt can serve as detours or stepping stones on our paths to success.

What were the main initial obstacles and how did you overcome them?

I turned my fear of competing with my male colleagues during my undergraduate studies into a stepping stone to achieving my goal. I graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology this year with a first class degree and a GPA of 81.59. I made the Provost’s List for all four years in a row and gained so much knowledge and practical skills along the way. I also co-founded Kids for Code during my undergraduate studies and have enjoyed every moment of tutoring my young students in Python programming since then.

What books are you currently reading?

I am currently reading John Maxwell’s “3 Things Successful People Do”. In this book, I learned a myriad of things, but most importantly, I learned that success is about knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.

I would definitely recommend this excellent book to everyone. I also read “Failing forward” by John Maxwell, another amazing read on turning failures into stepping stones to success.

What advice would you give to a future young or local and international talent?

This is just the start of an incredible journey and as a tech enthusiast and researcher, I know the future is very bright. I would like to encourage everyone not to give up on their purpose in life and turn all failures into dividends. It never hurts to try again.
